## Multiplication of Two Digit Numbers (2 x 2 Digits)

Hi Kids,

In this chapter, we are going to learn more about multiplication. Let us see the multiplication of 2 two digit numbers.

Let us multiply the numbers 44 and 28.

Write the numbers 44 and 28 one below the other, as given below.

In this problem, we need to first multiply the “ones” of 28 (i.e. 8) with 44. So multiply 8 with 4 in “ones” column. The answer is 32. As a rule, write 2 in the “ones” column and carry over 3 to the “tens” column.

The next step is to multiply 8 with 4 in “tens” column of 44. You will get 32. Along with this, add the carry over number 3. We get a two digit number 35. So the answer is 352.

The above mentioned steps are similar to the multiplication problems we learnt in the previous section. Now, let us proceed further by multiplying 2 of 28 with 44.

Multiplying 2 with 4, we get 8. Write 8 below 5. Note that we cannot write 8 below 2 in the answer column as we are multiplying the second number of 28. So we need to fill the first place (i.e. “ones” place) with ‘0’. Write 0 below 2 and 8 below 5 in the answer column, as given below.

Now again multiply the 2 of two digit number 28 with “tens” value (4) of 44. Multiplying 2 and 4, we get 8. Write 8 below 3 in the answer column.

Finally add both 352 and 880. Adding the numbers in “ones” column (i.e. 2 and 0), we get 2. Write 2 in “ones” column.

Similarly, do the same for the “tens” and “hundreds” column. In “tens” column, adding 5 and 8 we get 13. Write 3 below and carry over 1 to “hundreds” column, in this multiplication.

Now add the digits in “hundreds” column as well. Adding 3 and 8, we get 11. Now add the carried over number 1 to 11. The answer is 12.

We got the answer as 1232 by multiplying two numbers 44 and 28. Follow the above steps for other similar problems as well.
