Proper Fractions - Definition with Examples

Definition:
  • A fraction is called as a proper fraction when the numerator is less than the denominator.

Let us learn more about this with examples and exercises.

  Example 1:
Proper fractions - example 1

Ram, Raj and Ravi are going to have a Pizza.

Ram got one Pizza. He is sharing and eating the pizza with Raj and Ravi.

Here, three boys are sharing a single pizza. So, 1 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator.

This is called as proper fraction.

  Example 2:

Let us see an other example,

Proper fractions - example 2

Sita, Sam, Raju are close friends.

Sita is having two chocolates and shares it with her friends Sam and Raju.

Now three friends are sharing and eating two chocolates. So, 2 is the numerator and 3 is the denominator.

This is an another example of proper fraction.
