## Long Division Method

Dear Kids,

We have seen **"What is basic division"**. Now, let us learn "How to do long division".

**What is Long Division**
It is the process of dividing simple or complex numbers by breaking it into simple steps.

- The number which has to be divided is called the
**"dividend"**.
- The number which divides the other number is called the
**"divisor"**.
- The resulting answer is
**"quotient"**.

**Example:1**
Children let us learn , how to do long division with a simple problem.

**Divide 42 by 2.**

__Problem:__
__Solution:__
The number to be divided is called dividend - **42 is dividend**.

The number which divides the other number is known as the divisor - **2 is divisor**.

Take the first digit from the dividend that is 4 and check whether 4 is greater than the divisor that is 2

4 > 2
4 is greater than 2. Now, Let us find how many 2's will go into 4!

**
1 x 2 = 2**

2 x 2 = 4

Two 2's will go into 4.

Add 2 to the quotient. Now, multiply the divisor 2 with the the quotient 2. Subract the answer 4 with the first digit.

The remainder is 0.

Now, take the next digit (2) and check whether digit (2) is greater than the divisor that is 2.

2 is equal to 2(divisor).

2 = 2
How many 2's will go into 2?

**
1 x 2 = 2**

Only one 2 will go into 2(divisor)

Add 1 to the quotient. Now, multiply the divisor with the quotient and subtract from 2

The remainder is 0.

Hence, the quotient is 21 and the remainder is 0.

Therefore when 42 is divided by 2, the answer is **21**

**Example:2**
Kid let us learn how to do long division for large numbers **159 by 3**.

__Problem:__
__Solution:__
Here, **159 is dividend** and **3 is divisor**.

Take the first digit from the dividend that is 1 and check whether 1 is greater than the divisor that is 3

.

1 < 3
1 is lesser than 3. So, take first two digit from the dividend that is 15 and check whether 15 is greater than the divisor that is 3

15 > 3
15 is greater than 3. Now, Let us find how many 3's will go into 15!

**
1 x 3 = 3**

2 x 3 = 6

3 x 3 = 9

4 x 3 = 12

5 x 13 = 15

Five 3's will go into 15

Hence add 5 to the quotient.

Now, multiply the divisor with 5 and subtract from 15

.

The remainder is 0.

Now, Take the next digit (9) and check whether 9 is greater than the divisor that is 3.

9 is greater than 3.

9 > 3
How many 3's will go into 9

**
1 x 3 = 3**

2 x 3 = 6

3 x 3 = 9

Three 3's will go into 9

Multiply the divisor with 3 and subtract from 9

The remainder is 0.

So, the quotient is 53 and the remainder is 0

Therefore when 159 is divided by 3, the answer is **53**.
